Vice President, Contracting and Value-Based Partnerships

This is a fulltime opportunity.

Job Location: Boston, MA; will consider remote options

Novocardia is on a mission to empower clinicians across the United States to consistently deliver higher-quality, prevention-focused, patient-centered care, and enable clinicians to be rewarded for focusing on these services for their patients, and delivering care now that avoids more advanced disease down the line.

We are seeking a talented and experienced individual to join our growing team as Vice President, Contracting and Value-Based Partnerships.  This role affords a singular opportunity to work closely with a world-class team to help build a disruptive, mission-driven, physician-led clinical delivery organization from the ground up!

Chronic disease is the dominant cause of avoidable healthcare spending and death in the United States and worldwide.  Fortunately, much of this disease burden and associated spending is potentially avoidable through delivery of more proactive, prevention-focused care.  Our founding team has decades of experience in clinical medicine, payer and provider leadership, government, data science, and clinical operations.  We are deeply passionate about improving care quality, and providing more Americans with access to great, evidence-based chronic disease care. We are also deeply committed to building more sustainable and durable payment models for this care – models that reward clinicians for delivering the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

We are looking for high integrity, mission-oriented people who are passionate about improving the quality and value of chronic disease care in America, excited to join a dynamic, rapidly-growing, and diverse team, and want to build a disruptive, world-class business.  We are humble, ambitious, learning-oriented, focused on execution, and all in on this venture and vision.  Come join us!

Overview

The Vice President, Contracting and Value-Based Partnerships is a critical leadership position responsible for the development and growth of Novocardia’s value-based programs and footprint. This role will be responsible for overseeing provider contracting, cultivating and managing partnerships with risk-bearing entities (payers, risk-bearing providers, risk-bearing employers), building and scaling Novocardia’s value-based network, designing a suite of fee-for-value (FFV) contract models, and growing the patient population currently under risk-bearing agreements via value-based care program optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Shape, enhance, and drive execution of Novocardia’s FFV contracting and risk-bearing entity outreach strategies
  • Partner with the Senior Vice President, Operations and Chief Executive Officer to assess capabilities and resources required to successfully grow the value-based care population (e.g., claims and/or contracting delegation, staffing, vendor support); lead the build out of these capabilities as needed
  • Manage the Director, Payer Contracting with a focus on enhancement and execution of the value-based contracting and FFS contracting playbooks
  • With support from the Director, Payer Contracting, oversee FFS and FFV contracting and risk-bearing entity relationship management—including identification of opportunities, timely renegotiations, contract reviews, contract database, and CRM
  • Design FFV contract models including bundles, capitation and other forms of shared-risk contracting arrangements that support Novocardia’s mission and value proposition
  • Partner with the Corporate Development team to drive the growth and scaling of Novocardia’s FFV footprint by developing multiple partnership structures with provider organizations
  • Partner with leadership across the Operations, Corporate Development, and Clinical teams to develop the value-proposition and program design for network partners that do not take direct risk, but can expand Novocardia’s value-based footprint
  • Partner with clinical leadership and contracting support to pitch and present Novocardia’s clinical value proposition to risk-bearing entities—including primary care groups, accountable care organizations, and payers
  • Partner with the SVP Operations, CMO, and Chief Nursing Officer to guide efforts to align FFV contracting models and network development with execution of high-quality, high-value care in Novocardia’s partner practices
  • Partner with Analytics team and the Director, Payer Contracting to determine the feasibility of FFV contract success; apply analyses to negotiation strategy and tactics as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, public health, health administration, business administration, public policy, or related field
  • 7-10 years of leadership experience at a senior level within a value-based care-oriented healthcare organization
  • Minimum of 10 years contracting/negotiations experience involving payers and complex delivery systems
  • Understanding of health care pricing and reimbursement methodologies (preferably complex reimbursement models, including incentive-based models), network development processes, and contract language
  • Experience developing and managing payer and risk-bearing provider relationships
  • Experience identifying, developing, and cultivating strong relationships with payer partners
  • Experience developing and leading execution of value-based business models associated with different types of provider organizations (single specialty, multi-specialty, hospital, CIN, IPA etc.)
  • Team player; ability to work directly, and efficiently and effectively, with partner practices, physicians, staff, department leads, and health plans, and develop strong working relationships within a fast-paced, matrixed organization
  • Knowledge of principles of negotiation and superior problem solving, decision-making, and negotiating skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • At least 1 year of experience working in a startup environment is strongly preferred but not required
